LAKEWOOD – Alejandro Huerta-Arias, 24, of Toms River, was sentenced to eight years in New Jersey State Prison on June 13 in connection with a 2022 crash that killed a Lakewood man, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced.

Huerta-Arias was convicted of vehicular homicide in March following a nearly two-week jury trial. The sentence, imposed by Superior Court Judge Dina M. Vicari, is subject to the No Early Release Act, requiring him to serve at least 85 percent before being eligible for parole.

The fatal crash occurred on March 9, 2022, at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Courtney Road. Authorities say Huerta-Arias was traveling 93 mph in a 40 mph zone when his vehicle struck a Chevrolet Impala driven by 32-year-old Mark Mandel, who was making a left turn. Mandel died at the scene.

Huerta-Arias was charged in June 2022 and has remained in custody since his conviction earlier this year.
