Smirking driver points gun at another driver after merging mishap on Route 22, police say

Published On:

A 55-year-old Whitehall Township man says another driver pointed a gun at him during an encounter at a Route 22 exit in Lehigh County, according to court records.

The

Whitehall Township

man says the other motorist pointed the handgun at him about 8:43 a.m. Tuesday, July 15 at the Fullerton Avenue exit of eastbound Route 22 in Whitehall, according to court records.

The 55-year-old was exiting Route 22 when a charcoal gray Honda Accord drove up from behind him, nearly hit him and forced him back into the right lane of the highway, investigators wrote in the court records.

As the vehicles passed one another, each driver rolled down his window, and the 55-year-old saw the other driver point the handgun at him while smirking, court records say.

The alleged victim provided police with a description of the other driver and the Honda’s license plate number. Investigators say the car was registered to a 28-year-old man from Topton, Berks County. Law enforcement resources showed the car a minute after the incident was reported, about 2 miles away, court records say.

The victim identified the 28-year-old out of a photo lineup, and police say the 28-year-old purchased a 9mm handgun in May, according to court records.

The 28-year-old is charged with misdemeanor simple assault, terroristic threats and reckless endangerment. There was no attorney listed in court records for the suspect. His phone number was not publicly listed.

Court records show the victim was awaiting a preliminary hearing, where a district judge would consider whether evidence supports sending the charges toward trial in the Lehigh County Court of Common Pleas.
