Taking your own to-go box with you
To Heloise,When we go out to dine, my husband and I have a practice of bringing our own to-go box. Almost invariably, we have leftovers. A basic plastic container, such as those seen in most kitchens, would suffice.
For the rare occasions when we fail to bring a container from home, we also maintain a comparable container in each car. We had to make a few trips back to the car to retrieve the container early on in the habit, but these days I hardly ever go out to eat without my to-go box and pocketbook. A lot of garbage is kept out of landfills by this practice. In Montana, Linda
SEASON OF KITTEN
To Heloise,With so many female cats giving birth to litters, we are still in the kitten season. Now is a wonderful time to urge folks to have their pets spayed or neutered and to treat their neighbors and pets with kindness.
There are too many kittens in animal shelters. For kittens and puppies brought in by people who are unable or unable to keep them, they are pleading for donations and foster care. The shelter will provide you with guidelines and typically provide food to get you started if any of your readers are interested in fostering kittens.
We would be very grateful if you could foster a small litter of kittens or provide money and time to a nearby shelter. — In Detroit, Lana T.
TRENDS IN FASHION
To Heloise,For what reason do some ladies merely tuck a portion of their shirts into the front of their pants? I told my husband I didn’t know when he inquired. Are you or your readers aware of this? Regards. In Beebe, Arkansas, Kelly
Like so many fashion trends throughout our lifetime, Kelly, it’s only a passing fad that will disappear quickly.
The way I styled my hair in the 1960s, which was quite popular at the time, or the padded shoulders of the 1980s, which made us seem like football players in heels, make me chuckle every time I see photos of myself from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

WOODEN FLOORS
To Heloise,When my husband and I visited some early American homes last summer, we noticed that they all had wide floorboards. I’ve heard that wide boards have disadvantages, but my husband wants to use them in our new house that we’re building. Could you briefly describe the nature of these issues? — Evansville, Indiana’s Sonja L.
Sonja, you’ll need to deal with a few things. Wide boards are costly and difficult to find. It’s likely that you’ll have to fill them in and drive countersink screws, which takes time. The boards may exhibit some gaps in dry and cold weather.
Additionally, you might want to speak with a few individuals who have installed wooden flooring to get their opinions. Heloise
ADHESIVE LINOLEUM
To Heloise,How can linoleum adhesive be removed? All of the things I’ve tried so far don’t seem to be very good. The old adhesive is still there, but the linoleum is gone. — Prescott, Arizona’s Penny R.
Take dry ice blocks or bags and lay them on the old adhesive, Penny. Give it a few minutes to set, or it will become brittle. While the old glue is still cold and brittle, begin scraping it off using a thin-blade scraping tool. Heloise
