Although there has been much conjecture, is it accurate to say that a major U.S. airline will be discontinuing flights to hundreds of destinations next month?
Due to increased competition from other airlines, particularly at Chicago O Hare, American Airlines will be reducing its routes from August through the remainder of the year, according to a blog article that went viral from Travel & Tour World.
But after further investigation, NJ Advance Media discovered that this was untrue.
Since then, the blog has also been changed to eliminate the false information.
What you need to know about the veracity of the widely circulated rumor is provided here.
Are American Airlines flights are getting canceled?
American Airlines clarified that it is not actually making significant adjustments to its August schedule in a statement provided to NJ Advance Media.
A representative for the airline told NJ Advance Media that American has not recently changed its August flight plans.
The spokesperson went on to say, “We are pleased to provide up to 6,700 daily flights, more than any other airline, to help connect travelers to their next vacation before the summer season starts to wind down.”
The airline has a reputation for releasing its schedule 100 days ahead of time, with some flights having preliminary dates as far ahead as 331 days.
Is American Airlines doing well financially?
The third quarter has been financially difficult for American Airlines as a company.
CNBC reports that the aircraft carrier’s stock fell on Thursday as a result of its third-quarter earnings projections not meeting expectations.
The weakening of domestic consumers has made July difficult, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom told CNBC.
