Three contentious left-turn lanes along U.S. Route 22 in Phillipsburg have been redesigned by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, restricting their use to emergency vehicles exclusively.
Authorities planned to phase down the U-turn lanes on Memorial Parkway, which are close to the U.S. Post Office, starting in July. These turns are no longer accessible to the general public and are now marked as being reserved for official or emergency usage.
These specific traffic patterns are gradually being removed from new building projects throughout New Jersey. They are known as Jersey lefts because of how frequently they are used throughout the state.
After citizens of Phillipsburg voiced their concerns to authorities regarding these particular intersections, the decision was made. Residents drew attention to issues including poor signage and unclear driving, especially in the vicinity of the Route 22 toll road.
By eliminating these formerly prevalent but now more troublesome traffic elements, the reconfiguration is a part of a larger attempt to enhance traffic safety and flow in the area.
