Why Eagles’ Landon Dickerson hated his highlight reel play from the Super Bowl

Published On:

When the extensive list of notable plays began to surface on various social media sites after the Eagles’ 42-20 Super Bowl LIX annihilation of the Kansas City Chiefs, Landon Dickerson managed to make the cut. Offensive linemen are rarely the main focus of a highlight-reel performance.

Dickerson’s spin move on a pass play was absolutely amazing, but you didn’t see it as frequently as Cooper DeJean’s first-half interception of Patrick Mahomes, which he returned for a touchdown, or the deep Dagger pass from Jacksonville Hurts to DeVonta Smith late in the third quarter that guaranteed the Eagles would win their second Super Bowl in franchise history.

Dickerson and Chiefs star defensive end Chris Jones were involved in a double-team block at the beginning of the play. But as the play progressed, linebacker Mike Danna, who must have initially believed he had a clean path to the quarterback, was snatched up by the 6-foot-6, 332-pound Dickerson as he spun away from the double team.

Dickerson ultimately beat Danna instead, which made it possible for Hurts to shift to his right and finish a four-yard pass to Saquon Barkley.Although it wasn’t a huge gain, Dickerson’s amazing block was made even more noteworthy by the fact that he was playing with a severely wounded right knee that had prevented him from playing in the Eagles’ victory over Washington in the NFC Championship. In actuality, offseason surgery was necessary for the knee.

Dickerson talked about the play that went viral on social media and said on Thursday that he was fully recovered from the operation.

Warning: He detested it.

“I truly detest that play,” Dickerson remarked. I went into the game with a rough knee.

Dickerson replaced Cam Jurgens at center due to a back issue, and the knee injury happened during the first half of the Eagles’ victory over the Commanders. Despite having a sore back in the second half of that game, Jurgens played center and Dickerson was ultimately unable to play.

Regardless, it was evident that neither lineman was fully fit for the Super Bowl, but they both performed admirably against the Chiefs, and Dickerson ended up on the highlight reel.

Since I was experiencing some knee problems at the time, I believe that doing the spin was the most effective method to go about it, Dickerson said. I’m not a huge fan of the play. It’s not pretty, but it does the job. I liken it to skydiving, when you jump out of an airplane and pull an emergency parachute when your first one fails. The emergency parachute was just that.
