Berkeley Township officials are promoting the new bulk pick-up regulations after receiving numerous calls on the new procedure.
There are no designated days for bulk anymore; bulk can be taken up upon request at any time of the year.
According to Mayor John Bacchione, all it takes is a phone call.
Public Works can be reached via phone at 732-349-4616. The day following your subsequent trash pickup, a service member will arrange for your bulk pickup. Bulk should never be left at the curb with the expectation that it would be picked up right away after you call.
Furniture, non-treated lumber, mattresses, box springs (which need to be wrapped), and other goods that don’t fit in your trash bin are all considered bulk items.
Construction materials, pressure-treated timber, sheds, fencing, trash bags, masonry materials, and hazardous waste (please bring to Ocean County Reclamation Center) are not approved for pickup.
Township officials talked about problems with bulk pick-ups last year. For weeks, mattresses were being left outside without the necessary mattress cover. Unhygienic and ugly conditions resulted from this. Another worry was that Berkeley residents were letting friends and family from out of town drop off their bags at their houses.
The possibility of things sitting out for weeks while waiting for the bulk pick-up day was one of the primary drivers for this modification. Now, it’s completed faster. Residents don’t have to wait more than a week to bring it to the curb because there isn’t a designated day.
Additionally, it saves the truck’s gas and the workers’ time. They know exactly where to go and can complete the task without having to drive about looking for bulk.
Clean-Out Requests
A clean out needs to be planned if you’re cleaning out a house and getting rid of a lot of heavy stuff. Public Works can be reached at 732-349-4616.
During a bulk pick-up, a pile that would be too large for a 4 by 4 by 8 container cannot be removed. There is a $250 clean-out fee for these.
According to the ordinance, unless a $250 fee is paid to the Township of Berkeley and plans are made with the Department of Public Works for such collection, no one is allowed to place the contents of a residential dwelling for collection at the curb or anywhere else during a complete cleanout of the dwelling. Only collections that would fill a 4 by 4 by 8 container are eligible for the $250 fee. Any amounts that exceed that cap will incur an extra $250 cost, if any.
There will be an additional price if your belongings occupy more space than the 4 by 4 by 8 container.
A Clean-Out/Move-out Request Form is available on the Berkeley Township website, www.berkeleytownship.org. Select the tab for the Division of Sanitation.
The completed form must be submitted with the $250 cost. You can mail it to:
