Some cast members will not be returning to the police procedural when Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s 27th season starts on NBC on Thursday, September 25.
Season 27 will see the return of Octavio Pisano, who played detective Joe Velasco from seasons 23–26, and Juliana Aid n Martinez, who played investigator Kate Silva in season 26. As the plot of his character comes to a close, Pisano will make an appearance in the season premiere.
One of the most adored stars of SVU is returning, but Martinez and Pisano’s tenure on the show is coming to an end.Season 27 will see Kelli Giddish, who plays Amanda Rollins, return as a series regular.
For seasons 13–24, Giddish was a member of the main cast. She appeared in seasons 25 and 26, but the next season will mark her full-time return. For season 27, recurring cast members Aim Donna Kelly (Rene Curry) and Kevin Kane (Terry Bruno) have both been promoted to main cast.
Christopher Meloni, who played Elliot Stabler on SVU from seasons 1–12 and returned to the program in season 22, will return as a guest actor in season 27.Additionally reprising their roles are Mariska Hargitay (Olivia Benson), Ice-T (Fin Tutuola), and Peter Scanavino (Dominick Carisi).

This season, two more SVU alumni, Dann Florek (played by Donald Cragen) and BD Wong (played by George Huang), will also appear as guest stars. Wong hasn’t been on SVU since season 17, and Florek last made an appearance in season 23.
For season 27, Law & Order: SVU gets a new showrunner. The first female showrunner in the history of the program is Michele Fazekas, who previously wrote for SVU from 2001 to 2006. She succeeded David Graziano, who oversaw seasons 24–26 of the program.
The 1999 premiere of the Law & Order spinoff followed the NYPD Special Victims Unit officers as they looked into sex-based crimes.
