Due to a collision that occurred on Route 22 in Northampton County on Wednesday morning, traffic had to be rerouted into side roads, briefly trapping drivers on the roadway.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, a dump truck traveling west flipped near mile 328.6 in Bethlehem Township shortly after 11 a.m.
According to Trooper Nathan Branosky, it collided with the jersey barrier that separated the eastbound and westbound lanes, causing asphalt to spill over both sides of the highway and completely closing it down.
According to Branosky, authorities rerouted eastbound traffic onto Route 512 and westbound traffic from Route 22 West into Route 191.
As of around 1:30 p.m., state police reported that although the westbound lanes of Route 22 East were still closed, the eastbound lanes had reopened.
Police said the truck’s driver was transferred to a nearby hospital.
The collision also caused a spill of roughly 100 gallons of diesel fuel, according to a Northampton County 911 emergency dispatch supervisor.
When the highway would fully reopen was uncertain.
