Tom’s River On September 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Ocean County Historical Society will hold its fifth annual Ocean County History Day at its headquarters on Hadley Avenue.
The Joshua Huddy DAR chapter and Ocean County Cultural and Heritage are co-sponsoring the free event, which will include exhibits from local historical societies, book signings, museum tours, and reenactors. Highlights include presentations by Betsy Ross at 1 p.m. and Oney Judge, a former slave of George Washington, at 11:30 a.m.
In order to discuss and sign his new book, A Titanic Loss for New Jersey, which examines the effects of the tragedy on the state, author Robert DeSanto will be present. The 1860s Sculthorp House, which will feature a new display commemorating the Historical Society’s 75th anniversary, is also open for tours by visitors.
The Joshua Huddy DAR, the Peto Museum, and historical societies from Berkeley Township, Brick, and Island Heights will all have displays to show. This year, there will be a particular emphasis on getting ready for the country’s 250th anniversary of independence.
According to OCHS board member Frank Parks, this event becomes bigger every year. It showcases Ocean County’s remarkable legacy and unites history buffs of all ages.
