It won’t be easy walking away from
Wilson Area High School
.
But after serving as an administrator in the school for 29 years, it’s time for John Martuscelli to enter a new chapter in his life.
The school board
accepted his resignation Monday, July 14
. It’s effective March 11, 2026, although his last day in the office is slated for this December.
“I always said Wilson is like a family and this place is like home,” Martuscelli said Tuesday.
“There is no doubt that he is well-loved and there will be big shoes to fill when he leaves us,” said Wilson Area School District Superintendent Harrison Bailey III.
Martuscelli started as an assistant principal at the high school in 1997, then was promoted to principal in 2000.
The 58-year-old decided it’s time to spend more time with his family, including his 8-month-old grandson.
“I will be retiring from one of the best school districts around and it will be very difficult walking out of here on the last day,” Martuscelli admits.
He served as the
acting superintendent
at the start of the previous school year and was relieved of that duty when Bailey was hired to fill that role in December,
coming over from Liberty High School
in Bethlehem. Bailey’s successor as
Liberty principal is Brandon Horlick
.
Martuscelli said he was attracted to the quality of the Wilson Area School District when he was hired, and credits the staff, parents and the community for keeping it that way during his tenure.
“My biggest accomplishment is that I didn’t screw it up,” he joked.
In addition to spending time with family, Martuscelli plans to play golf and travel more. He said might serve as a math tutor.
“I love math and love working with kids, so that might be the perfect little side job to keep me busy,” he said.
Bailey said the planning process has already started to replace Martuscelli. The board will vote soon to advertise the vacancy.
“(Principal Martuscelli) has served this community with unwavering honor, and we are eternally grateful for his dedication,” Bailey said.
