Best of Miss Manners: Do I ignore a coworker when she repeats the same stupid joke over and over?

Published On:

Greetings, Miss Manners How should one react to a joke that is told over and over again?

One of my coworkers always comments, “Gee, I forgot my coat and gloves!” after using the restroom in the office. or I neglected to pack my parka! or some other trivial remark about the bathroom’s temperature.

Yes, the restroom in our office is freezing. My coworkers and I shouldn’t have to courteously laugh, smile, or agree with her several times a day, in my opinion. Ignoring her is the obvious approach, and I do just that. My coworkers, who are far more refined than I am, nod, laugh, and smile in accord, then roll their eyes and gripe when she isn’t present.

Can you think of something clever to say to stop it?

PERSONAL READER: The greatest approach to defuse a joke is to treat it as though it were serious. Oh no! Miss Manners says in this instance. We believed we had requested management to address that. However, I believe I have a blanket in my van if you need to borrow one.

Your would-be comedian will eventually grow weary of having to explain the humor to you and move on to someone else.
