The city of PhiladelphiaDuring Wednesday’s joint practice against the Eagles, quarterback Shedeur Sanders of the Cleveland Browns did not have any standout performances on the field.
Sanders stood out from the rest of Cleveland’s reserves during the team time (11-on-11s). He never snapped.
After practice, however, Sanders had a memorable experience when he and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts drove a golf cart around the Novacare Complex.
“Yes,” Hurts answered, “I keep the conversation private.” We talked for a very long time. He merely wanted to talk when he came to me. As I mentioned before, I’m always available to provide my viewpoint on what I observe and how I’ve approached situations.
In the end, it requires a lot of perseverance, patience, and hard effort. It must be something you desire. I am therefore standing by him from my position and wishing him luck in all of his endeavors.
Unless Sanders elaborates on the conversation, we might never know what was said.
However, it’s clear why Sanders wanted to talk to Hurts. Hurts is the only quarterback in the NFL who can empathize with Sanders’ feelings of being questioned and dismissed over the past three months.
Hurts’ football career has been questioned and closely watched.
It all started when he was benched during Tua Tagovailoa’s 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game. It’s still there even after Hurts won MVP of the Super Bowl. He is still criticized by some for his experiences at Alabama and his second-round draft selection.
Sanders is being criticized more harshly.
Sanders’ surprise drop to the fifth round was caused by the disapproval of his handling of the selection process. Although the road is now more challenging, he was previously thought to be a future NFL starter. He was ranked fourth on the Browns’ quarterback depth chart.
Sanders might feel more confident that he could surpass expectations after learning that Hurts did.
Sanders and other aspiring quarterbacks may find inspiration in Hurts’ narrative, and they may turn to him for support when things get rough.
