“The Cosby Show” alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner has died. He was 54.
The Jersey City native, who was best known for portraying Theodore Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday, July 20, per
ABC News
.
The outlet reported that Costa Rican police confirmed that Warner’s cause of death was asphyxia. He was caught by a current while swimming near a beach in Limon. His body was discovered Sunday afternoon.
Warner played the only son of Dr. Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) and Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) on all eight seasons of “The Cosby Show,” which aired on NBC from 1984-1992. The role earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986.
After dozens of women accused Cosby of sexual assault and harassment, Warner noted during a 2023 interview with
People
that he was “still proud” to be a “Cosby Show” alum.
“Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now, I’m still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on — first and foremost, Black culture — but also American culture,” he told the outlet at the time.
Warner went on to appear in the UPN sitcom “Malcolm & Eddie” and the FX drama “Sons of Anarchy.” He is survived by his wife and daughter, whose names he chose not to disclose publicly.
Just two months before his death, Warner said during an appearance on Melyssa Ford’s
“Hot & Bothered” podcast
that he “wasn’t sure if I would ever get married or have kids” before he met his wife.
“At some point, I was like, ‘If I’m going to have a kid, this is the person that I would want to have it with,’” he said of his wife.
