Eagles make surprising trade for talented playmaker| How does he fit in?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Eagles acquired Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie on Sunday.According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelisseror, the Eagles traded Metchie and a 2026 sixth-round pick for Houston’s tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick. They switched the two Day 3 selections.

This season, Metchie might rank as the Eagles’ fourth wide receiver.

Despite the strong performances of Ainias Smith, Darius Cooper, and Johnny Wilson during training camp, Philadelphia was able to recruit more depth.

Maybe all the Eagles wanted was a backup with more experience.

Metchie, who was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, has only caught 40 passes for 412 yards and one touchdown. The Eagles may trust him to make more plays than their youthful backups, but he is unlikely to have a significant offensive impact.

Cooper is a rookie who was not selected in the draft, and Wilson and Smith are entering their second seasons. Most likely, one of the three will no longer be on the 53-man roster. Cooper and Smith are the two wide receivers vying for sixth place, with Wilson being the most secure.

Metchie will be in the Eagles’ wide receiver room with DeVonta Smith, a former teammate from Alabama.During his two seasons (2019–2020) with Smith, he caught 59 passes for 939 yards and six touchdowns.

Metchie finished 2021 as Alabama’s best wide receiver with 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns.
