Eagles’ offense disappoints with rough training camp practice from Jalen Hurts (Day 3 observations)

Published On:

The city of PhiladelphiaYou nearly forgot all the bad parts of the Eagles’ training camp session on Saturday after their best play.

Wide receiver A.J. Brown of the Eagles sped down the right sideline and had a little gap on CB Kelee Ringo, but he just needed a small amount of room to complete the catch.

This is because Jalen Hurts, the quarterback for the Eagles, threw the ball over Brown’s shoulder, straight into his hands, and out of Ringo’s reach.

The ball was positioned so that only Brown could reach it, so even if Ringo had turned his head faster to be in a better position, it wouldn’t have stopped Brown from making the catch.

During a clumsy offensive effort, it was one of the few instances of a beautiful pass and catch.

Hurts was bright throughout the first two practices, but his negative plays outnumbered his favorable ones.

Hurts aggressively assaulted various areas of the field from the first team period (11-on-11) to the last one, missing his objectives.

Due to Quinyon Mitchell’s excellent coverage, Hurts’ first deep pass to wide receiver DeVonta Smith was a bit too high and required a flawless throw. Smith tried to hit the ball with one hand, but it rolled off his fingers.

Soon after, Ringo faced tight coverage once more, deep on the left sideline, but his pass was far too short. Hurts had Brown slightly open.

Hurts’ long ball to Smith later in the day went out of bounds because of pressure from Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith, which affected his accuracy.

When he missed tight end Dallas Goedert for a score in the red zone, Hurt’s troubles only got worse. He completed a tight-window touchdown pass to Smith, past Cooper DeJean, to end that drive on a high note.

In addition to Hurts’ shaky performance, NJ Advance Media noted the following at Saturday’s practice:

  • Defensive tackle Jalen Carter

(shoulder) didn t practice, while center

    Cam Jurgens (back)

    , rookie linebacker

    Jihaad Campbell (shoulder)

and guard Kenyon Green (knee) were limited participants. Through three practices with that designation, Campbell and Jurgens have both participated in team drills and don t seem too limited. Campbell received first-team reps on Saturday and more will be thrown on his plate soon.

  • Cornerback Adoree Jackson

    and

    safety Sydney Brown

began the day with the starting defense, then rookie safety

    Andrew Mukuba

and Ringo mixed in. Right now, there s no clear favorite for either starting job.

  • Tyler Steen

ran with the first-team offense again, and no other right guard has challenged him yet.

  • Mitchell, who might travel with No. 1 wide receivers this season, continues to steal the show, making life difficult on Smith, who is one of the best No. 2 wide receivers in the NFL.

  • Goedert had a strong day, beating Mukuba and Jackson for two catches in the middle of the field, and nearly caught a touchdown from Hurts.

  • Defensive tackle

    Moro Ojomo

got in the backfield multiple times, including for a sack in the red zone. The Eagles need Ojomo to help replace Milton Williams production, and so far, the signs are good.

  • Backup quarterback Tanner McKee sailed a pass to Avery Williams in the right corner of the end zone, but he also completed difficult throws to Johnny Wilson and Danny Gray.

  • The results for third-string rookie

    QB Kyle McCord

were mixed, too. But he ended practice with a fantastic, over-the-shoulder completion to wide receiver Elijah Cooks, drawing the explicit reaction of Gray, who stormed down the field to pump up Cooks and trash- talk cornerback

    BJ Mayes

, the undrafted rookie who was beaten. Mayes had good coverage, but he is three inches shorter than Cook (6-foot-4) and was unable to out jump him.

  • According to Brooks Kubena of The Athletic

, Mukuba collided with Gray at the end of practice, went to the sidelines and was checked by a trainer. His status is worth monitoring.
