Eagles trade for former NFC East starting QB amid backup concerns

Published On:

Sam Howell, a backup quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, was acquired by the Eagles, according to a source who spoke to NJ Advance Media. The news was initially reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Sunday morning.

In exchange for Howell and a 2026 sixth-round pick, Philadelphia traded Minnesota a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick.

No. 2 quarterback Tanner McKee has a right finger injury and doesn’t seem to be on pace to play in Week 1, thus Eagles general manager Howie Roseman made this decision. He did not have surgery on his finger, but there is no estimated time of return.

Due to a poor summer, sixth-round rookie Kyle McCord is not yet ready for the professional ranks. Against the New York Jets in the Eagles’ preseason finale, he went 15 of 35 and intercepted Jets rookie safety Malachi Moore.

If Hurts had been injured and McCord had been forced to play, the Eagles offense would have been in serious difficulty. They have a greater chance thanks to Howell.

Howell, who was selected by the Washington Commanders in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, has started 18 games, including 17 for Washington in 2023.

Howell was moved to the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason after recording 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in that season. He barely completed five of his fourteen passes and threw an interception in two games as the backup last season.

Although Howell lacks McCord’s skill and experience, he is the league’s top backup. He is a big-arm, high-variance player. He can make some plays, but the Eagles will have to live with his blunders.

Howell will be demoted to quarterback three when McKee returns. He might remove McCord from the team.

As a result, the Eagles waived or injured safetyLewis Film.
