Eagles veteran’s absence vs. Jets signals he has won starting job

Published On:

Since he didn’t play a single snap, cornerback Adoree Jackson emerged victorious from Friday night’s Eagles preseason finale.

Jackson will start against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1 since the Eagles held him out with their other defensive starters.

Jackson has been getting the majority of the first-team reps opposite Quinyon Mitchell for the past week.Although he hasn’t had a terrific summer, he outperformed Kelee Ringo in preseason games and sessions.

Due to a quad ailment, Ringo was unable to play tonight. He and Jackson fought for the starting position, but he performed poorly in the Eagles’ first two preseason games and during training camp.

Ringo was moved to the second and third-team defenses prior to his injury earlier this week, where he spent the majority of his time with the threes opposite Eli Ricks.

It’s a little upsetting that Jackson beat Ringo. The Eagles did not make any major acquisitions at CB to challenge the latter, who they wanted to start. Jackson was viewed as a backup plan.

Ringo must have disappointed the Eagles. He might no longer be regarded as a possible starter. He hasn’t gotten much better since last summer.

Jackson may eventually be demoted for Jackson Bennett, who was dealt to the Eagles earlier this month, even though he is expected to start in Week 1. Bennett has greater potential, but Jackson’s nine years of NFL experience makes him a safer choice.

Bennett had a strong season with the Las Vegas Raiders (2024), but a shoulder injury kept him out of the final seven games.

Trust is important to Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fangio waited four weeks to start Cooper DeJean last season, so he won’t start Bennett unless the CB is clear on all of his responsibilities. Fangio’s plan is hard to grasp in a few weeks.

Against the Jets, Bennett and rookie Mac McWilliams, selected in the fifth round, began.

Bennett had a break pass up on Jets fourth-round rookie Adrian Smith on the second drive. On the next drive, he then allowed two catches for 11 yards, but his tackle on the second catch resulted in a fourth-and-short.

Maybe Jackson surpasses low expectations to hold off Bennett and establish himself as a reliable starter. He was reliable for the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants in the past, but he struggled last season and might regress this year.

At the beginning of camp, Fangio showed no faith in him.

Fangio stated on July 29 that he was unsure if he thought it was the location. I believe it’s time for Adoree to demonstrate that. In Tennessee, they chose not to re-sign him when his contract expired. His contract was up, but the Giants didn’t. It’s time to reveal who he is or is not.

It’s difficult to conclude that Fangio has been proven incorrect based on what we’ve seen. Fangio, however, doesn’t appear to have faith in the other CBs either. The CB2 for Philadelphia might be a major liability.
