BRICK Late Wednesday afternoon, authorities said, the ALDI supermarket shop on Route 70 had to evacuate due to a rooftop fire.
At 4:57 p.m., the store manager called Brick Township police dispatchers to report smoke coming from the structure. According to the Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety, fire companies from District 1 arrived and promptly triggered a second alert when they noticed flames emanating from the roof.
Mutual aid organizations helped firefighters restrict the fire to a rooftop air conditioning unit. There were reports of minor roof damage. The store remained closed for cleanup as the Ocean County Department of Health responded as well. According to company representatives, internal procedures must be fulfilled before reopening.
After receiving treatment for a minor injury, one firefighter was discharged from Ocean University Medical Center. There were no other recorded injuries.
The cause is being looked at by Fire Marshal Paul Matula.
Authorities praised store management for swiftly evacuating patrons and advised the public to heed staff and emergency personnel’s instructions in case of an emergency.
