‘General Hospital’ star returns to the show after getting killed off

Published On:

Despite his character being killed off in the ABC soap series, Ryan Paevey will return to General Hospital in September.

From 2013 to 2018, Paevey portrayed Maxie Jones’s (Kirsten Storms) romantic interest, Nathan West. After being shot by Cesar Faison (Anders Hove), Nathan’s biological father, he passed away.

Following his tenure on General Hospital, Paevey starred in a number of Hallmark Channel films, such as A Little Daytime Drama and Unleashing Mr. Darcy. One year after declaring he was taking a break from acting, he is back at General Hospital.

Paevey mentioned his dissatisfaction with the entertainment world and his desire to spend more time with his mother during her fight with lung cancer.

In a June 2024 Instagram post, he stated, “I haven’t felt like I belong in this industry for a long time, and it has negatively impacted my mental health.” It has led me to a somewhat dark place and transformed me into a version of myself that I don’t particularly like.

When Executive Producer Frank Valentini unexpectedly contacted Paevey, he decided to return to General Hospital, suggesting that he is getting better.

After a brief conversation, he asked if I would think about staying for a long. We discussed various tale possibilities that involved my various time obligations. Paevey told Deadline, “And I thought, If we’re going to do this, we should really do it and surprise the fans with a meaty storyline.” My enthusiasm for a homecoming and seeing old friends after seven years was unexpected. My final call sheet from the last day of taping, which was January 18, 2018, is still tacked up in my home office.

Though it’s not unheard of for soap operas to bring back apparently deceased characters or portray someone new, it’s unclear if Paevey will return to his role as Nathan. Paevey may not see his longstanding co-star Storms, who is currently on a temporary hiatus, depending on how long he remains on General Hospital.

In a July Instagram video, Storms disclosed that she is taking a break to let her and her daughter Harper, age 11, get used to their new house in Nasvhille. “I’ll be back on the show in November or December,” she said.

In Storm’s absence, Nicole Paggi has taken over as Maxie. In December 2023, when Storms was unavailable, she took over the role.

ABC broadcasts General Hospital weekdays at 3 p.m. ET. The day after they premiere, episodes can be streamed on Hulu.
