Hints from Heloise: Memory quilts can bring great comfort

WHEN YOU GO SHOPPING, USE YOUR PHONE

To Heloise,I have little imagination or memory when I go grocery shopping, and I always end up losing my shopping list. It is a catastrophe! I now take a picture of the shopping list right before I grab it, which has saved me several times.

When placed on the bottom shelf, the small, low-contrast computer pricing tags are nearly readable, so the phone camera can also be used to view them. To see what it says, simply take a picture of it and blow it up! (Don’t forget to bring your reading glasses!)

Inconvenient sleeping

To Heloise,Sadly, my wife passed away after 40 years of marriage. The room we used to share is where I sleep now, but I can’t sleep there the way I used to. I tried sleeping in the living room due to memory and energy, and it worked perfectly. I made the decision to purchase a twin mattress. Anyone who has experienced this problem ought to check to see whether this resolves it for them as well. — via email, Kamal B.

A REMARKABLE QUILT

To Heloise,I came upon a suggestion regarding the quilt made for a friend using shirts her spouse had worn prior to his passing. It truly lessens grief, therefore I’m not sure why I hadn’t written to you about it earlier. (It did, at least for me.)

About five years ago, my spouse passed away after 59 years of marriage. Because to the nationwide COVID-19 shutdown, we were unable to hold a funeral or any kind of celebration of life. My granddaughter took the rest of his father’s shirts, stating she would donate them to a local thrift store, after my son had taken the things that meant the most to him.

She sent me a lovely lap blanket made from his favorite shirts that she had seen him wear over the years when she and her family visited around two months later. She also brought a pillow that was constructed from a single shirt that still had its buttons and pocket. Knowing that dad was somehow still here helped me get over my sadness, and it was just amazing.

This occurred during the time I was participating in a biweekly group phone call grief therapy group, which was very beneficial to me. I was able to overcome my loss and grief by sharing this tale with the other callers. I appreciate all of your tips and send you hugs! — Oxnard, California’s Jeanne F.

PUMPING ISSUES

To Heloise,Whenever I try to open new lotion and hand soap pump bottles, I become agitated. I think it has something to do with my directional challenges. I need to pause and consider which route is right and which is left. To no avail, I have also rehearsed the lefty loosy, righty tighty phrase to myself.

I either argue myself out of moving a pump top in one direction or another, or I confuse myself. I’m waiting on someone to show me how to open these pump bottles, which I currently have three different bottles on my counter. My husband and two sons have attempted to assist, but by that time, I’ve generally messed up the cap. Do you know a trick I could use? In Fort Wayne, Indiana, Megan

This is a good question, Megan! Do you have any tips for readers on how to make opening a pump bottle easier? Heloise
