THE AMOUNT OF ITEMS RECYCLED
To Heloise,I wonder how much of the energy-saving items we spend on recycling are actually recycled. Are you aware? I appreciate all of your advise. In the Tribune Chronicle, we adore you. In Cortland, Ohio, Bob S.
According to the latest data, Bob, the United States’ overall recycling rate is 32.1%:
-
Paper and paperboard accounts for 79.1%.
-
Plastic is sadly only 5% to 9%. The difficulty with plastic centers around added dyes and the lack of machinery needed for various plastic types.
-
Recycling rules and regulations depend heavily on state, city and regional directives. For example, some recycling centers will take shredded paper while others will not. — Heloise
Purchase locally
To Heloise,Big-box stores are fun, but I wish more people would shop locally, especially for everyday necessities like groceries and casual clothing, which support small companies. When she might have found a better deal at a nearby mall, my sister decided to drive to another city to buy wrapping paper, a greeting card, and a baby present.
Since customers are the lifeblood of their communities, small companies must remain open and typically provide better service. I know there is nothing you can do about this, but I just wanted to remind folks of this. Office buildings and stores that remain vacant for years are disliked by everyone. So, support the growth of your town by shopping locally! In Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, Hilary G.
HANDWRITTEN NOTES OF THANK YOU
To Heloise,How long should it take me to thank everyone for their gifts after my wedding? The idea of printing a generic card that reads, “Thank you for the lovely wedding gift,” was rejected by my mother. It’s tacky, in her opinion. We need your assistance. — In Minnesota, Holly and Russell D.
Russell and Holly, you both need to sit down and begin drafting your thank-you notes as soon as you return from your honeymoon. Your mother is right when she says that a generic “thank you” is inappropriate. You will soon finish writing a few handwritten messages of gratitude each night. Make sure to talk about the present and your plans for using it. Always keep in mind that being polite is elegant! Heloise
END OF PAPER PLATES!
To Heloise,I discovered something. Supermarket deli trays frequently use foam trays to showcase their products. These can be used again as picnic plates after being well cleaned. Just be sure to never use a tray that has any form of raw meat on it. — Falmouth, Maine’s Wayne T.
Control of Fleas
To Heloise,You can use dandruff shampoo to get rid of fleas from your dog or cat. Simply use dandruff shampoo to remove the dandruff and warm water in the bathtub or kitchen sink, depending on the size of your pet.
An orange sliced in half can also be used to remove fleas from a dog’s fur. To keep fleas away, scatter coffee grounds—preferably unused ones—around your yard. In Santa Rosa, New Mexico, Ralph E.
