According to Forbes
, the social media giant has deleted about 10 million accounts this year, specifically cracking down on people impersonating influencers, spammers and accounts driving “fake engagement.”
Here’s what you need to know about the crackdown and what to do if you are affected.
Why is Facebook purging so many accounts?
Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is purging all these accounts to highlight “unique” personalities on its platform.
“We believe that creators should be celebrated for their unique voices and perspectives, not drowned out by copycats and impersonators,” Meta
announced in the Facebook Creators blog.
What do I do if my account was deleted by mistake?
Although Meta has stressed that spam accounts are the only ones affected by this mass purge, some Facebook users are reporting that their profiles have been deleted by mistake.
The social media company addressed this problem on
Facebook’s support pages
.
Typically, users have 180 days to appeal their account suspension or deletion after being “informed in an email.”
“You’ll see we’ve suspended your account or we’ve disabled your account when you try to log in,”
Facebook said.
Facebook added that it may disable some accounts that were not previously suspended in “cases of severe or time-sensitive violations.”
